Lorde And Emeli Sande Pay Tribute To Manchester Terror Attack Victims

Musicians Lorde and Emeli Sande have paid tribute to the victims of the Manchester terror attack.

The singers both used the stage at BBC Radio 1's Big Weekend in Hull to dedicate their performances to the 22 people who lost their lives in the horrific attack which happened last Monday.  

Both women broke down in tears as they discussed the events during their sets on Saturday night.

The Daily Star reports that Lorde wept as she told the crowd: 'Never let one person get in the way of your love for live music', before singing her track Liability.

Emeli also got emotional during her set, and dedicated her hit Read All About It to the people of Manchester and wept as she sang the lyrics.

Earlier in the night, Radio 1 host Nick Grimshaw led the crowd in a minute's silence.

The performers moved audiences with their powerful tributes. 

Singer Lorde - real name Ella O'Connor - 20, went for citrus vibes as she donned a pair of lime green culottes paired with a pink top as she stormed the stage.

The Royals hitmaker entertained crowds with her powerful voice, while 19-year-old Zara Larsson put on a dazzling display.

Lorde's top featured a frayed hem and an unusual train that flowed behind her back.

She flashed her taut midriff in the ensemble, and slipped a quirky pair of pink cat-eye shades over her eyes, adding a series of layered necklaces - including a red charm number from Foundrae - to her ensemble. 

Allowing her long, brunette locks to flow behind her, the singer jumped around excitedly as she threw her heart and soul into the performance.

Debuting a much shorter hair style than she has done previously, Zara styled her now shoulder-grazing tresses into tousled bouncy curls.

She opted for a subtle make-up look for her performance and completed her stage getup with a nude-hued lipstick on her lips. 

Since she first stormed the music charts in 2015, the Swedish artist has experienced international success and has collaborated with a number of other stars including Tinie Tempah, Clean Bandit and Ty Dollar Sign. 


Meanwhile, ahead of her performance, Zara addressed her scantily-clad appearance on stage and insisted she 'likes' her minimal outfits.

Speaking to Daily Star, she explained that she is happy to dress racily in her music videos if she deems it appropriate. She said: 'I can do skimpy outfits and still feel like I want to do it.'

'But there is also a deeper conversation about what is expected for female artists and how we expect them to look.

"It they don't [dress sexy] we bash them... and if they do, we bash them still - it's such a double punishment for women but if it fits the song then I am up for being sexy.'

The festival event - hosted by radio station Radio 1 - plays out over two days and will see the likes of Katy Perry and Kings Of Leon headlining. 

Plan B and Royal Blood will head up its second stage, with James Arthur, Rita Ora, Little Mix and Sean Paul all performing over the weekend.

Radio 1's Big Weekend is hosted every year in a different location across the country and tickets are free for all attendees.
